Take Your Homeschooling Into the Pool

Is the pen-and-paper homeschooling getting a little tedious this lockdown?

Now that spring has sprung, it’s the perfect time to take your homeschooling into the pool with these fun educational pool games and activities. Not only will you be impressing your children’s teachers with your creative approaches to learning, but the kids will be having so much fun they won’t even notice you’ve disguised their school work as pool play!

Before we get started – a pool health reminder!! Firstly – ensure you have  primed and prepped your pool for the new swim season. Can’t remember how? Check out our tips here. Secondly, be sure to collect all equipment at the end of these games and remove them from the pool area. Digging foam pieces out of your filter or scraping rusty coins off your pool floor is not what we’re going for with these games.

Splash and Spell

If the thought of one more spelling list has you wanting to reach for the chocolate block (or wine bottle!) a little too quickly, this game is for you. And the good news? It can be made flexible enough for the earliest of readers right through to the big kids wanting to join in the fun!

Equipment:

Bath foam letter set OR sponges, scissors, and permanent marker

Preparation:

If you don’t happen to have a foam letter set, you can make your own by chopping up a pool noodle or some sponges and writing letters on them with a permanent marker. Hello, bonus points for letter writing practice!

How to play:

If the goal is specifically to nail the spelling list (or rehearse those dreaded sight words), then this first option is for you. Choose a word from the list and grab the necessary letters. Throw them into the pool and have your speller dive in to retrieve them. When they bring them back to the edge, they must place them in the right order to spell the word and then say it out loud. Repeat until the list is complete. If you have enough letters, you can end by throwing all letters in and timing how long it takes to retrieve and spell the entire list!

If fun over educational outcomes is more what you’re after, then simply throw all the letters into the pool and see how many words your player/s can make! You can set certain parameters to make it more challenging such as:

  • Limiting the number of letters that can be collected per round
  • Eyes must be closed when collecting letters
  • Setting a timer (and adding a race if more than one player)
  • Seeing how many words can be made from the one collection of letters

Splash and Add

Stealing from the fun of Splash and Spell, this one is for the maths lovers. It uses the same sort of concepts as above but switches out the alphabet for a set of numbers.

Equipment:

Bath foam number set OR sponges, scissors, and permanent marker

Preparation:

Just like in the last game, you can make your own number set using a chopped up pool noodle or sponges. Or, perhaps add a science twist (and added swim challenge) and have your young one brainstorm other pool-safe items, then decide whether they’re likely to float or sink. Grab a sample of each to test them out, then decide which to use.

How to play:

Much like the spelling version of this game, the rules are dependant on what you’re wanting to get out of the game. You might throw just 2 numbers in and have your player/s race to grab then add them up. Make it a little trickier for older players by alternating between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

If you have 2 or more players, have some fun with “chance”. Throw in all the numbers and ask players to dive in and collect as many as they can until all are collected. They then swim back and add up their totals. The person with the highest score wins. Again, the options here are pretty endless, so focus on the fun and see where your creative little minds take you!

Treasure Hunt

This one is best kept for confident swimmers who are capable of swimming on their own to the bottom. You’ll also need to make sure all equipment is collected at the end, so be prepared to dive in yourself for a hunt, if your players get a little stuck!

Equipment:

A range of silver and gold coins

How to play:

If your young player is still pretty new to the concept of money, simply throw a few coins into the pool for your player to hunt down and bring back to you. They must name each coin correctly before the next round can begin. If they’re already up to counting coins, there are lots of fun variations you can try:

“Collect and count”

Throw a set number of coins in and have your player collect then count up the value of the coins

“Highest value”

If you have more than one player, throw all coins in and have players race to collect as many as they can until all are collected. Come back to the edge and see who ended up with the highest value. Learning can be extended here by considering who has the most coins and who has the highest value of coins. This helps children understand the different value of coins and that more doesn’t necessarily mean more money (although wouldn’t we love that to be the case!)

“Don’t Go Over”

Throw all coins in then call out a value that your player/s cannot go over when collecting. You might, for example say “don’t go over $2”. Players then go hunting for coins and can collect any number and combination, provided their collection does not add up to a value greater than $2.

“First To…”

If you have more than one player and they are itching to bring out their competitive streak, this one is always a winner! Throw all coins in the water then call out a monetary value. The first player to return to you with a coin or coins to that exact value wins. Only one player? No worries, switch to a time-based incentive. For example, your player has only 30 seconds to return to you with their collection.

Not only will you be winning with maths practice in this game, but helping to develop critical thinking skills, as players consider whether to spend time searching for the right value coin or collect what they can grab as quickly as they can and count on the go! If you’re really keen to cement their learning, play a few rounds then chat to your players at the end about which strategy they found most (and least!) effective and why.

The Great Race

Need some quiet time to knock over a deadline or Zoom meeting before hitting the pool with your learners? Then this STEM boat racing challenge is perfect!

Equipment:

Water-proof (and non-colour-leaking) craft materials such as leaves, sticks, alfoil, chopped pool noodles, plastic plates, straws, food trays (well washed, of course!). Consider the environment in this activity, and use recycled materials where available.

How to play:

Provide your little learners with a range of crafting materials they can use to design their very own boat. Let them know the boat will need to be able to go in the water and float on its own. Then, let them jump right in and experiment using their best creative brainstorming caps. Keen for some inspiration? Hit up Pinterest and YouTube for some DIY toy boat inspiration. We’re loving these juice box sailboats from Apple Green Cottage for younger ones or the rubber band powered boat by Amazing Science for the slightly more advanced engineer of the house.

When the prototypes are polished it’s time to hit the water to test them out! You might like to set a few different awards to celebrate all strengths, such as a boat that floats the best, sails the furthest, or even the most creative design. Wrap up the challenge by discussing what worked well and what design tweaks would make for a stronger boat. And, of course, be sure to take a photo of your little engineers to show off their creative skills to their teachers!

Just Dive Right In

To wrap things up, we’re ending with an activity that needs very little instruction and little to no equipment. Simply grab the swimmers, the towels, some fun tunes, and let your kids just dive right in and have fun! If you need to justify it on the homeschooling timetable, then a swim session most certainly fits within Sports class. But, it’s also ok (and, in fact, very necessary) to have blocks of the day to just unwind and have fun. These are tricky times we’re facing and our children pick up on the uncertainty around them. Keeping to a school routine can be really helpful for children, but if homeschool stress is getting you or your little ones down, remember that wellbeing comes first at the moment. And a little pool fun in the sun may be just the brain break the house needs!

The PPbD Dream team are thinking of all our beautiful mid north coast community during this season of staying at home and hoping you and yours are safe and well.

We know it won’t be too much longer until we can return to the much loved Aussie tradition of backyard barbies and pool parties (and we’ll be sure to bring you our fave group pool party games when it’s time!).

Staying Connected This Lockdown

As we heard the announcements today of an extension to the current lockdown, our hearts were heavy for our community.

We know this is an incredibly difficult time for so many, made even harder by the fact that one of the things we do so well as a community during times of crisis – coming together to support each other – is the very thing we are having to limit in order to stay safe. While we may need to physically distance for now, there are still many things we can do to foster connection – to each other, to our beautiful town, and to ourselves. So, we’re putting our normal swimming pool chatter aside for this post, to bring you a few ideas for staying connected this lockdown.

Physically distanced, socially connected

“Social distancing” – it may be just two words, and we all know what they mean, but there is an underlying connotation that, for many, can be tough and jarring to hear. While it is really important for us to follow the rules and guidelines of staying safe during lockdown, a simple word switch can pack a powerful punch on our mindset and mood. Not to mention how we consider connection. Switching our language from “social” to “physical” distancing can help remind us that we can and should still seek out opportunities to feel socially connected. What does social connection look like under COVID-safe regulations? Here are a few of our favourite examples:

Dine In…At Home

Many of us will be missing the special moments of connection in our favourite restaurants and cafes. While ‘dining in’ in the traditional sense might not be an option at the moment, many of our favourite locals have adapted their menus to offer takeaway and delivery options. So, give your fave local restaurant a buzz to check out their lockdown menu options. Not only do you still get to indulge in your fave cuisine, but you’ll also be helping to support our local businesses move through this challenging time.

Get out the board games and the puzzles – it’s playtime!

Feel a little silly asking “how was your day?” at the dinner table when you were literally there to witness every moment of it? Conversations can start to get a little stale when you’re all living and breathing in the same space 24/7. Try pulling out the trusty Monopoly board or hunt down some dice for a game of Yahtzee. A bit of laughter as you roll the dice will see you all filling up that connection bucket in no time and, as a bonus, it can also act as an ice-breaker for those more sensitive ‘check-in’ chats that are so necessary and valuable at this time.

Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, House Party, Messenger, Google Duo – the options are endless!

Yes, Zoom fatigue is a thing…but we’re not talking about connection to your computer through countless hours of virtual meetings or online learning! We’re talking about maximising the tech we have to stay connected with our loved ones who we’re physically cut off from for now, or perhaps even trigger the opportunity to reach out to those who feel long lost (virtual school reunion, anyone?). Whether it’s a short virtual coffee break or a distance dinner party extravaganza, video calls are a fantastic way to connect meaningfully to our loved ones.

Connect through kindness

While lockdown rules mean we can still travel to the shops for our essentials and stretch our legs in the fresh air, this is harder said than done for some of us. And, while we’re lucky to have many delivery options available in our local area, it often means the need to be a little tech-savvy, again leaving some of our most vulnerable stranded. If you’re feeling well and able to support, you might like to consider seeking out some connection by way of lending a hand to those less able. Perhaps it’s a simple gesture like taking the neighbour’s bins out or offering to pick up some groceries. It could be a daily ‘check-in’ call or walking their pet for them if they’re unable to leave their home for now. Don’t forget those doing lockdown on their own. The introverts among us might be ok with talking to their fish for now, but no doubt our solo friends would appreciate the odd check in. Whatever the offer of help, we know it will be appreciated, and you’ll get the wonderful added bonus of feel-good-fuzzies from giving to those in need.

Connect Into Nature

We really are so blessed to live amongst such beautiful natural surroundings. And, given outdoor exercise is on the list of essential reasons to leave home, it’s never been a better time to pick up a daily walking routine (or perhaps dust off that bike and pump up its wheels!). Whether you rope in the household to join, ring up a friend to offer up your +1 allowance, or head out for a solo adventure, take the opportunity to connect back into nature – your mind and body will certainly thank you for it. Unsure of the current rules? Check out the official public health orders and restrictions here.

Connect Back to Self

When we think of social connection, we usually assume it has to involve others. But don’t underestimate the power of taking time to connect back in with yourself. Grab a journal and commit to daily reflection writing, run a hot bath and indulge in a soak, or put on your favourite song and dance it out in your kitchen! Whatever your jam, be sure to put some time aside each and every day for some self-care. Finding it difficult to do so? Reach out to your family for some help (a great chance for grandma to show off her new tech skills to the kids on a Zoom and play sesh!), or find an accountability buddy at work or amongst your friends who’ll gently remind you every so often to check out of the to-do’s in order to check in with yourself. Even 5 minutes a day can make all the difference.

Connect With the Professionals

Last, but certainly not at all least, know who is around and how to contact them when you need a little extra support. These times are strange, and overwhelm can hit us at any point. It’s ok to not be ok, and you don’t need to go it alone. Talk to your GP or reach out to one of the below support lines for help:

6 Tips to save money on pool maintenance

Think pool maintenance needs to break the bank? Think again.

With some simple strategies up your sleeve, you can enjoy your home swimming pool without breaking the bank. Here are our top 6 tips to save money on pool maintenance.

1. Minimise water wastage

Reducing the amount of water you use to maintain your pool is not only good for the environment, but good on your wallet, too! Save on your water bill by following some simple water saving practices, like using a pool cover, keeping an eye out for leaks, and not overfilling when it’s time to top up the water levels. Flashback to our Water Week article for more tips on being water wise with your pool maintenance.

2. Don’t over-clean

Yes, we know we bark on a lot about keeping a regular routine to your pool clean, and you should. But, there is definitely such a thing as an over-clean pool, which sees you throwing money down the drain (almost literally!) on unnecessary chemicals and equipment overuse. Not to mention the time you’ve spent cleaning that you could be splashing instead. Keep it clean? Yes. But no need to over-do it.

3. Choose the cheap time to use your equipment

Take advantage of your electricity off-peak times and time your filter to run within these hours. You should find 10-12 hours per day is enough for your filter to do its job well. You might also want to consider when and for how long you run any additional features, such as lighting and water features. Heading out for the day? Switch them off and enjoy the reduction on your electricity bill and carbon footprint!

4. Clean your filter regularly

We find this one is often forgotten in the regular maintenance sessions, and also not one generally associated with money-saving tips. But, a clogged up filter has to work harder, doesn’t do as good a job, and adds extra load to your pool pump. This means you’re not only ruining your general cleaning efforts, but you’ll likely need equipment repairs or replacement earlier than necessary. A quick way to burn a hole in your wallet! Taking a few minutes on a regular basis to clean out your filter will keep your equipment working well for years to come.

5. Reconsider your “perfect” temperature

For many, a pool heater is a must have to a successful and popular swim season. With our weather becoming more and more unpredictable, choosing your pool temp is a luxury worth paying for! That said, if you’re maintaining your pool at warm-bath temperatures, you’re potentially chewing through dollars unnecessarily. Try a couple of weeks with the temp turned down a few degrees and see if you adjust well. Not a fan of the slightly cooler temp? You can still save good money by adjusting your temperature (or even turning the heater off) when you know the pool won’t be in use for a while. Just remember to switch it back on before the next splash you you might get a rude shock!

6. Invest in a bi-annual cleaning and maintenance service

Many people are quite happy to DIY the general maintenance efforts throughout the year and happily save a considerable amount of money in doing so. If this is you, you might like to consider investing in a bi-annual professional clean and check. While we appreciate this is an upfront cost you’re currently saving on, getting a pro in to do a health check of the pool, spot any structural concerns, identify any mini leaks, and check your DIY efforts are on point, can save you loads in the long run.

As you can see, just a few small tweaks to your pool maintenance routine and you’ll be reaping the money-saving rewards in no time!

What To Do With Your Not-So-Floating Flamingo

The winter weather will see many of us wrapping up our swimming pool for a couple of months. This often leads to a not-so-spring clean of all things pool-related.

The pile of swimwear that’s seen one season too many…even if they’ve only seen the one season. The Mount Kosciuszko of swimming goggles, despite having gone half the summer unable to find a single pair.

And, of course, the must-have floating flamingo that had a blowout after one too many dive bombs landed.

Sadly, though, this latter Aussie pool party icon (and its wide array of inflatable friends) poses quite the plastic pollution dilemma. Most are made of PVC and are therefore not suitable for household recycling. So, what do you do with your not-so-floating flamingo now?

Well, the easy answer is to send it off to landfill.

But is that really the right answer?

With Plastic Free July acting as a friendly trigger to consider how we can be a little more environmentally friendly, we’ve done a little googling to see just how much it matters to ditch our deflated friend into the red bin.

On average, Aussies send 2.5 million tonnes of plastic to landfill each year. 47% of that comes from households. PVC is pretty low on the plastic waste audit list, but this is mostly due to it being used in hard form more than soft, and therefore usually more durable.

The bad news? Inflatable toys are a known plastic problem.

The good news? Overall, we’re improving year on year! Plastic waste has dropped by 3% in just a couple of years, and there are now fantastic plastic stewardship programs designed to keep the stuff out of our landfills.

So, here are some tips on how you can be a part of the plastic pollution solution.

Patch it.

Ok, so this one might be a bit of a “state the obvious” moment. But… we figured it worth the plug just in case. If it’s just a small puncture you’re worried about, you can pick up a PVC patch pack for $3 or less and you’ve got your favourite inflatable friend back again!

Remember – before packing away any of your pool toys, make sure you dry them out completely to avoid mould. You’ll also want to pack them up well so you don’t do it a re-puncture when it’s time to pull them back out again.

Give it away.

Does patching seem too much of an effort? We get it! Life’s busy and finding time to patch up a pool toy might not be high on your list of priorities. But, as they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Take a quick snap of your deflated friend and throw it up on your local Buy, Swap, Sell page (yes, you’d be surprised what people will snap up for free). It’s a win/win! You save the extra room in your red bin and they get their hands on a crafty patch project and score themselves a free floaty friend in the process!

Send it for Upcycling.

This one takes “give it away” and “crafty patch project” to a whole new level.

Yep, there are now several clever enviro-cookies rescuing failed inflatables and upcycling them into bags, pouches, carry cases, and even keychains!

Here are a few upcyclers we found pretty cool…(And no…these are not paid plugs…we just think they’re really cool!)

Whyatt and Jack

Originally kickstarting their sustainably-minded brand back in 2010 with their first product line, I Was a Bouncy Castle, this innovative duo expanded into their inflatable pool toy range, Inflatable Amnesty, back in 2018, allowing the general public to contribute their unwanted pool toy collection to be repurposed into fun accessories.

I Used to Be

Inspired by Whyatt and Jack during a UK trip, Kiwi ocean lover, Nina, returned home with a mission to divert plastics from New Zealand landfills. She set up shop in her dad’s garage, giving inflatable toys a second life as waterproof accessories, and has been blown away by the market response. Check out her range here.

Ploys Design

The first two were so cool, we just had to share. But, of course, it’s a little impractical (and not so great on your carbon footprint) to go shipping your unwanted inflatable overseas, so we’re wrapping up with an equally cool pool toy upcycler a little closer to home. As their purpose statement says, Ploys shares the same purpose – to give new life to old pool toys, and while there are currently no collection points in or around Port Macquarie, they offer a $10 voucher for every donated punctured pool float.

So…before you go filling up your red bin with all that unwanted and damaged plastic…

Check if you can offer it a second life. Mother nature will be happier, you’ll be happier, and your wallet will be happier next swim season!

Are you keen to learn more about Plastic Free July and perhaps even sign up to the #ChooseToRefuse pledge? Check it out here. If we all commit to just one small change at a time, together we’ll create a pretty powerful plastic-free ripple!

Why and How to Prep Your Pool for Winter

Whether you’re planning to use your pool through the winter or not, here’s what you need to know and do to prep your pool for the cooler winter months ahead.

Traditionally, the cooler weather triggers the need to clean out and wrap up a home pool for shut down over winter. Thanks to our beautiful Mid North Coast climate along with modern-day heating technology, many home pool owners have the luxury of an all-year-round pool. That doesn’t mean you don’t need to prep your pool for winter, though! Even if you’re planning to enjoy your pool through the winter, it’s likely you’ll use it a little less and therefore pool care looks a little different than in summer. And, if you’re not planning a dip or two through the chilly season, it’s important to know that just switching off the pump and throwing the cover over is likely to bring you a bunch of unwanted surprises…and costs…come spring!

So, here are a few key steps you need to take in order to properly prep your pool for winter.

1. Clean your pool

Ok, so this is a little obvious, but worth stating… just in case. It’s good to get into the habit of using each seasonal change as a trigger for a good, detailed pool clean. And, we’re talking a deep clean, not just a “scoop the leaves out and we’re done” effort. Option 1 – outsource the job to a professional pool cleaner, then sit back and watch your pool sparkle once more. Option 2 – a good ol’ DIY. Give the walls and floor a good brush, remove any debris from the pool itself as well as the skimmer basket and pump, backwash your filter, and ensure you’ve cleared the surrounds for any loose items that might find their way into the water.

2. Test and adjust the pool PH

An unbalanced pool can cause serious corrosion, start the development of algae, and also throw your equipment into expensive repair mode. A water balance is a must. Your pool’s PH levels should ideally remain between 7.4 – 7.6. You can test it yourself using a PH kit, but remember to scoop at least elbow deep to ensure you’re not just capturing an accurate water sample. Not sure what to do if your pool is out of whack? Give us a call and we’ll get you on track with how to dose or shock accordingly.

3. Add a winterising chemical kit

Winterise. Yes, it’s a real word! A winterising chemical kit will help improve the clarity of your water and protect against algae build-up by removing phosphates (algae’s favourite food). While you can buy chemicals separately, a winterising pack will usually cover all you need while also providing instructions so you can DIY without concern. Most winteriser packs will include algaecide, phosphate remover, and a natural clarifier. Be sure to read (and follow!) the instructions carefully, and always store chemicals out of reach of small hands and fury friend mouths.

4. Throw on the pool cover

Want to ensure you don’t undo all that hard work you’ve done in steps 1-3? It’s time to throw on your pool cover. Don’t have one yet? Now’s the perfect time to invest. A pool cover will not only protect all you’ve done to prep your pool for winter, but also minimise the maintenance needed throughout the cooler months, too.

use your pool cover in winter

5. Continue with simple maintenance

While we’d love to say otherwise, it’s unfortunately not quite as simple as set and forget. If you truly want to avoid a time consuming and potentially costly spring prep, it’s worth keeping to a simple maintenance routine. And when we say simple, we mean it. A quick water chemistry and filter gauge check every couple of weeks should do the trick. If you want to go the extra step, you may like to have your water tested by a professional mid-season to ensure all is as it seems.

And there you have it.

A little effort to prep your pool now means a lot of effort saved when it comes time to roll that cover back and jump back in! Don’t forget to check back here in August for our top tips in reverse – how to get your pool ready for spring!

When We All Pool Together

Cover image courtesy of Focus Magazine, Issue 181

Incredible things happen when we all pool together.

As the rain began to pour down on Friday 19th March, many schools and workplaces issued what they believed to be conservative but sensible recommendations to head home in case of flooding. As the day progressed and the rain persisted, we knew there would be some challenges throughout this wet weekend, but nobody could have predicted the level of destruction that would unfold over the coming days and weeks.

With so many still on the path to recovery after the 2019 bushfires, and many still working through the impact of COVID-19, this unprecedented event was more than enough to push our community beyond the limits. Yet, being the resilient and close-knit community we are, there was not a single delay in the response to help as the water began to dissipate and physical connection to flood-affected areas was once again available. And when the callout came, there was no question amongst the PPbD Dream Team about lending a hand.

With so many incredible individuals, businesses, and community organisations responding rapidly to the extensive needs across our wider region, we focused our efforts on near-by inundated residences along Settlement Point Road, Hibbard Drive, and Hastings River Drive. Arriving with our GTH Earthmoving equipment, expertise, and willing helping hands, we quickly realised we were not alone in our desire to help our community in need.

Despite the extent of the devastation and destruction, it is incredible to see the difference that can be made when we all pool together to help out.

Our experienced team, led by Meredith & Gary, were able to move tonnes of mud and earth, in an effort to get people back into their homes. And, as we continued to do what we know best, fellow mud buddies got to work drawing on their own strengths, from sweeping mud out of houses, piling debris together for collection, baking and delivering much needed food supplies, and providing a listening ear to those beginning to come to terms with the reality before them. It was an enormous effort as we dove into the initial clean up, and we’re so incredibly proud to be a part of such a connected and compassion community.

We would like to thank all of the amazing people we worked with for giving so much and making such a difference.

We know there is a long road ahead to full recovery, but we also know our town is strong, and together, we will rise again.

Perfect Plants for Your Poolside Garden

The perfect pool plants will not only bring that paradise feel to your dream pool but can be practical too, providing shade, privacy, and shelter from wind.

The wrong choice of plants, however, can bring headaches, high maintenance, and potential pool damage. Think leaf litter, falling flowers, and reckless roots. No thanks! So, here are a few perfect pool plants to consider adding to your dream pool landscaping plans.

Succulents

Born without much of a green thumb? Succulents are the perfect plant for you, whether by your pool or anywhere else in and around your house for that matter! Well known for their low maintenance and clean-cut appeal, succulents really are the perfect poolside plant. Some of the more popular poolside succulents you’ll come across include yukka, agave, and aloe vera (with the latter giving you the bonus of a free cooling gel forever at your fingertips!), although there are so many varieties to choose from, with a few colour options too, that we’re sure you’ll find something to suit your landscaping style.

Trees

Trees offer a fantastic opportunity for shade but can become a maintenance nightmare if not selected carefully. Some of the basics you’ll want to think about are the root system, leaf and flower drop, sun and shade requirements, and tolerance to chlorine and/or saltwater (depending on the pool water you choose). You’ll also want to do your best to avoid trees that attract bugs and pests or you’ll be forever swooping them out of your splash zone and scooping them out of your filter. If you’re fixed on a desire for the floral look, the frangipani is a popular choice as it not only assists with those summer holiday feels but its much larger leaves and flowers help minimise the pool-scoop factor (keep in mind that any deciduous tree will create an ongoing maintenance need). Citrus trees are also a great option to add a pop of colour without as much leaf litter drama. Finally, it’s hard to go wrong with the classic Lilly Pilly. They are a fast-growing evergreen with minimally invasive roots and can be sculpted into a feature or grown together to form a hedge for privacy.

Grasses

Ornamental grasses are a fantastic low-maintenance plant for your poolside garden, offering aesthetic appeal without the falling foliage. They also tend to require minimal care, and unlike trees where you’ll need to wait a season or two before really achieving your look, most ornamental grasses will give you some instant visual gratification from day one. Mondo grass is ideal for weaving in between pavers and perfect if you’re wanting to keep your plantline low, while purple fountain grass is a good option for a fuller look with a splash of colour. Bamboo is also a popular choice with its added benefits of shade and privacy, but choose wisely as some bamboos can wreak underground havoc with their invasive roots. Gracilis bamboo (also known as slender weavers) is a very popular option across Australia as it will grow in most soil types, acts as fantastic privacy screening, and is not prone to pest or disease problems. As long as it is prepared properly, it is an affordable and attractive poolside garden option.

5 reasons to invest in a swimming pool in 2021

Deciding whether or not a backyard pool is a good investment for you?

You can almost guarantee that the cost of installing a swimming pool in your backyard will be cheaper than the price of Kim Kardashian’s bathroom sinks… but perhaps that says a little more about Kardashian lifestyle choices than it does about the cost of installing a pool!

We know that for most families, the decision to invest in a backyard pool is a big one. So why should you trade in your local pool pass to invest your hard-earned money into your own backyard pool oasis? Here are our top 5 reasons to invest in a swimming pool in 2021.

It can increase the value of your property

You’ve likely landed on this post because you’re trying to justify a budget for a new pool. So, it makes sense to kick start with a financial argument. Swimming pools are a popular search requirement for house hunters. In fact, realestate.com.au reported over 7 million searches that featured the word “pool” over the past year. It’s therefore reasonable to assume that a pool can help boost the appeal of your property. In fact, it has been said to increase the value of a property by up to 7%. That said, a quick google search will reveal this to be a contentious topic with mixed reviews. Pools aren’t for everyone and there will be some buyers who view a swimming pool as a hassle or hazard. So, if you’re considering a pool solely for its financial benefit and not for all the wonderful benefits it can bring to home living, you may find safer ways to invest your cash.

It’s fun!

This one is for the hedonists among us; those who live by the YOLO principles and work to live not live to work. ROI doesn’t always have to be about the money! If you’re after an investment that will guarantee an infusion of fun and joy in your life, then a swimming pool is your answer. Whether it’s pool parties for the kids, making Marco Polo memories with the fam bam, or even just having yourself a solo splash fest, a well-designed and effectively temperature-controlled swimming pool can provide you with year-round fun and entertainment. We reckon that alone gives good bang for your buck.

It can boost your wellbeing

Fun-factor not quite enough of a justification? What if we told you that said ‘fun-factor’ is scientifically proven to boost your wellbeing? And… the positive emotion infusion that a swimming pool can bring you is just one of the many health benefits of owning your own pool. Research shows that swimming has a significant positive impact on our overall health and wellbeing. It’s a great full body workout, easy on the joints, can relieve muscle tension and back pain, and is a great way to relax and unwind after a solid day’s work. Keen to learn more about the health benefits of owning a swimming pool? Check out our post on Why Owning a Pool is Good For Your Health.

It keeps the kids entertained

If you’re parenting tweens or teens, you’ll have no doubt experienced the testing tantrums associated with trying to drag square eyes away from devices and out the front door for some tech-free entertainment. Investing in a swimming pool means enjoying guilt-free home days, knowing you always have a fun and healthy entertainment option at your fingertips. And even better? Entertaining your kids and their friends just got easier and cheaper! A backyard pool gives you the ticket to swap those expensive outings for budget-friendly but full-of-fun catch ups at home.

It looks good

They say looks aren’t everything, but they’re a nice little bonus, right? We see this investment reason as a little icing topper on an already awesomely-tasting cake. While it may seem somewhat superficial to some, a well-designed and aesthetically pleasing swimming pool area becomes more than just something pretty to look at. Water is known to bring a natural sense of peace and serenity to an environment. Add a water feature and carefully selected surrounds, and you’re well on your way to building a beautiful backyard oasis that will no doubt become one of your most treasured and tranquil spots to relax. That said, planning and prep is key to ensuring you pull off these benefits. A poorly placed pool can not only be an eyesore but negatively impact the usability of your entire backyard.

Luckily, our highly experienced in-house backyard styling extraordinaire (a.k.a. Project Coordinator), Meredith Howard, has you covered here. Give us a call and put our 20+ years in the business to work, to help you design your dream pool alive.

Fibreglass or Concrete? What’s best for you?

So you’ve made the decision. It’s time to invest in a slice of luxury which, let’s face it, these days is becoming more and more an Australian home staple.

But when it comes to choosing the right swimming pool for your home, the options can become quickly overwhelming! Do you want a rectangular or more organic shape? Salt-water or chlorine? Step-ups or swim outs? And oh so much more.

The good news? Starting with a decision on your pool type will automatically answer a lot of these questions for you. So the next question becomes, fibreglass or concrete? Here are a few pointers to help you decide whether fibreglass or concrete is the better choice for you.

Cost:

When it comes to initial build and installation, fibreglass and concrete pools aren’t too far apart in cost. Both have a spectrum of pricing from budget to luxury, with concrete usually sitting a fraction higher than fibreglass overall (more so if complex design is chosen). But what’s often overlooked in the budget debate between these two pool types are the ongoing maintenance costs. Concrete pools require a lot more love and care to stay in tip-top shape. They’ll generally require more regular cleaning with stronger chemicals, as they’re more prone to algae and bacteria build-up. You’ll also likely need to resurface around every 10 years. So, while upfront costs will only differ by around 10-20%, a concrete pool across its lifetime can be more than triple the cost of a fibreglass pool.

Design:

When it comes to design flexibility, concrete pools allow complete freedom to design alive any customisation you can dream up. Fibreglass pools, on the other hand, are pre-designed and therefore not as customisable. That said, fibreglass options are far greater than they used to be, allowing for more aesthetic choice than ever before.

So, if you’re after a truly unique pool design and expense is no object, then concrete may be the way to go. But, if you’re keen to stick to a budget and want to be splashing sooner rather than later, we recommend checking out our pool designs page to see the wide range of fibreglass options available to you. When combined with various options for pool decking and endless landscaping possibilities, it’s possible to achieve almost any pool design dream with a Masterbuilt Pools fibreglass pool.

Installation:

As much as concrete pools have an advantage on the design front, fibreglass pools win on an installation level. Concrete pools are built from scratch on-site, including earthworks, framework, concrete spray and finishing. Because fibreglass pools are pre-made, they are faster to install – we’re talking weeks or sometimes even days (dependent on stock availability) compared with a possible 3-6 month timeframe of a concrete pool.

Durability:

Whether fibreglass or concrete is more durable is a fairly contentious question. Both are highly durable, hence being the two most common pool types. Concrete can be a little more susceptible to cracking, but splits are still possible in fibreglass pools due to poor earthworks or ground movement (a risk considerably reduced when your pool installer also happens to be your highly experienced excavator…a.k.a the Dream Team at Port Pools by Design!). Concrete also doesn’t handle salt well (unless you invest in a tile surface), so if you’re planning to soak up the lower-maintenance and silkier-swimming benefits of a saltwater pool, either plan for more regular resurfacing of your concrete pool, or opt for a fibreglass pool which is unaffected by salt.

Conclusion?

There’s really no right or wrong in this decision – it’s a personal choice, and a case of weighing up the pros and cons against your budget, design dreams, and the amount of effort you want to expend in maintenance. A concrete pool offers greater flexibility in design, but with the compromise of longer install time and higher ongoing costs. A fibreglass pool means some limitations in pool design, but in exchange offers lower maintenance costs and a much faster dream-to-swim timeframe.

Keep Your Pool Cool this Summer

Keen to beat the heat? Here are some tried and tested tips to keep your pool cool this summer.

We often talk about (and have plenty of solutions for) pool heating but pool cooling doesn’t seem to get much airtime. Yet, our scorching Port Macquarie summer heat can lead to water temperatures that aren’t so ideal for that refreshing cool down you’re seeking from your backyard pool oasis. Not to mention the extra maintenance hassle that comes from unnecessary evaporation. So, how can you keep your pool at the right level of cool this summer?

Here are a few tips to consider:

Install a thermal heat pump

We’ve all heard of reverse cycle air conditioning, but did you know the same thing exists in the pool world? Yes, the right sort of thermal heat pump will keep your pool at your preferred temperature all year round. It might not be the cheapest or most energy efficient method, but it’s guaranteed to get the job done every time! That said, there are a few other tricks and tips we recommend that will keep your pool cool while also keeping your energy bill at bay and your carbon footprint that little bit lower, too.

So…moving onto tip #2.

Add a pool cover

If you read our last article, you’ll know that using a pool cover can reduce evaporation by up to 95%, which means it not only saves water (and therefore money on your water bill), but is a sensible investment when it comes to keeping those scorching sun rays from sizzling up your pool water temperature. And, of course, less time leaf dredging is a nice added bonus! So, if you’re looking to install a water cooling accessory that doesn’t require a spike in your energy costs, a pool cover is definitely your best bet.

Install a water feature

Not just a pretty feature or a tranquil sound, a waterfall or fountain is a great way to take the edge off that Port Macquarie summer heat, given that moving water stays cooler than still water. As the pool water streams through the fountain it scores a breath of fresh air, returning to your pool nice and refreshed. While you’ll find this water cooling top tip will work better in the early morning or evening when the air is a little cooler, you should still notice at least a little difference at any time of day.

Run your filter at night

A water feature out of your budget and a heat pump a little OTT for your liking?? Simply switch the time of day you run your filter. Running your pool filter at night works on the same principles as installing a water feature, cycling the water through the cooler air and thus acting as a cooling strategy to drop your pool temperature by a couple of degrees or so by morning. We won’t lie, it’s not going to match the temperature drop of the previous options, and its effects will really only hold true for morning swims, but it also requires no investment and very little extra effort, so it’s a great budget friendly way to test taking your pool water from slightly suspicious warmth to a relaxing and refreshing temperature.

Got your own top tip?

We’ve come across plenty of other DIY water cooling solutions over our many years in swimming pool design and installation, from piling in the ice cubes, to water cycling with super soakers and to that we say, each to their own and whatever works! So, if you’ve got a tried and tested water cooling strategy (or perhaps at least a funny story at a failed attempt) we’d love to hear it! Send it through to info@portpoolsbydesign.com.au and your story may even score a mention on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Pool Water Saving Tips to Help You Celebrate National Water Week

It used to be said that homes with swimming pools use up to twice as much water, on average, compared with non-swimming pool homes.

But with increased awareness of how precious our water is and how we can all play our part in reducing our water use, this stat is beginning to change. And you can easily be a part of this change! This National Water Week, we’re encouraging you to take a look at how you can be more water wise when it comes to your backyard swimming pool.  So, here are our top pool water saving tips this Water Week.

And, the good news?

Becoming a pool water saving whiz not only saves our precious water and reduces your carbon footprint, but will keep a few extra pennies off your water and electricity bills and in your bank account.

Use a Pool Cover

It may be a bit of a pain to roll on and off, but a cover will not only keep your pool cleaner in between uses, it can reduce evaporation by up to 95%. With evaporation often the number one culprit for water use in home swimming pools, a little bit of extra effort in using a quality pool cover when your pool is not in use packs a great punch in water saving impact. If a high quality pool cover is a little beyond the budget, consider purchasing a pool blanket or a liquid pool cover, either of which will still be reducing evaporation by almost half the amount of leaving it uncovered.

Increase the shade around your pool

Doubling as a smart sun-safe strategy, increasing the shade around your pool is a great pool water saving tip as it naturally reduces evaporation, with less pool water in direct sunlight. A shade sail or umbrella can often do the trick, or even better, if space and budget permit, perhaps it’s an opportunity to consider a landscaping update. Did you know that the Port Pools by Design Dream team offer landscaping consultancy and services as well as swimming pool installation? Co-Owner, Meredith Howard, specialises in renovations and project management, including styling and design, so get in touch to ask how we can bring a new look and feel to your backyard, while saving you water and ultimately water bill dollars!

Check for leaks regularly

If you’ve got a Port Pools by Design pool, you’re in luck, because fibreglass pools are the least likely of all the pool types to leak, but a crack can still occur and if it does you want to jump on it quick-smart. This not only saves water but avoids the risk of the pool lifting from the ground due to the leak. One of the main causes of leaks in fibreglass pools is water loss, so if you’re following the two pool water saving tips above, you’re off to a good start in avoiding cracks and therefore leaks. That said, it’s still always worth getting into the habit of checking for leaks on a regular basis. Things to look out for? Unusual water pooling on tiled or paved areas when the pool hasn’t been in use, soggy grass near the pool, and checking your pool equipment for any damage. Not sure what to look for or think you may have a problem? Then it’s time to get in touch with a professional. If found early, leaks are usually repaired easily and without much expense.

Finally, little changes can make a big difference

We’ve covered three pretty common pool water loss causes and their solutions, but there are also a few really simple, free things you can do to keep your water level high and reduce the need to throw a hose in. Firstly, have a think about how much water the users of your pool are carrying out. While there’s no need to bring in the water police for the sake of a few drops, some simple pool behaviour changes can help keep more drops in than out. Make sure your swimmers squeeze out the excess water in their swimmers on the shallow step of the pool before actually exiting (also a great way of keeping the towels from getting saturated, too!). Love playing with water soakers? Great! But recommend that squirts are kept inside the boundaries of the pool as much as possible, so that the water stays captured and not all over the pavement. And finally, for an extra evaporation hack, be intentional about when and for how long you leave your water heater on. Not only will it save you a bunch on your electricity bill, but cooler water evaporates less than warmer water.

And, of course, if you need to top up, then that’s ok!

While it’s great to save water using these pool water saving tips, it’s really important that you do reach for the hose if your pool water level drops below recommended levels. As we pointed out earlier, this could lead to unwanted cracks and can also cause problems with your filters, even leading to a sad day for your pool motor. So, reduce your water use where you can, knowing you’re doing your bit for our environment (and your bills!), but know it’s ok to use water where needed to keep your pool healthy and well maintained.

Swimming Pool Safety Tips For Safe Splashing this Swim Season

It may seem common sense, but a quick read about swimming pool safety could save a life.

Baby throwing a ball into a pool

Swimming pool safety may seem like a simple, common sense topic, but just like you’re required to go through the safety procedure every time you board a plane (whether you’re a frequent flyer or not), refreshing your memory on keeping you, your family and friends pool safe is a must-do in the lead up to and during swim season. After all, one small little oversight can lead to a disastrous outcome. Here are a few of the basics, plus a couple of extra tips you might not have thought of before.

Check your fence and gate

The strict laws around swimming pool fencing are there for good reason. Beyond the hefty fines for non-compliance, you can be putting yourself and your loved ones at risk if you aren’t meeting the requirements as set out in the Swimming Pools Regulation 2018. The basics of the legislation require home swimming pool fences to:

  • Be secure and in good working order
  • Be at least 1.2m high, and 1.8m high if backing onto a property boundary
  • Be no more than 100mm from the ground
  • Have no vertical gaps more than 100mm apart

You’ll want to double check for any rust or loose screws, wiggly fence panels, or any other damage that may not be immediately visible to the eye, but seem structurally concerning. Be sure to also run a check on your pool gate. Does it swing back to its closed position when released, and latch correctly on its own? Does the latch hold if the gate is pulled on? Is the area surrounding it clear of any tempting climbing platforms, to prevent little legs and arms from making their way up to unlatch it unsupervised? These are just a few of the priorities when making sure your pool area is safe and secure.

Check in and around the pool

If you read our last blog, you might have been encouraged to get stuck into some pool-ready prep work, which most likely means you’ve dusted off your pool equipment and have been testing your water. This also means you possibly have some nasty chemicals and electrical equipment ready for the taking by curious little ones or furry friends. A quick but thorough check for any items that may have been accidentally left out, along with an eye out for any unwanted creepy crawlies in nooks, crannies and the sheltered underneaths of your pool edges, will keep your household safe and ensure no unwanted surprises!

Create Safe-Splash Rules

What was your first thought when you saw the cover image to this blog post? We’ll bet you had an immediate flash of concern for that little one headed straight into the pool unsupervised on pursuit of the colourful ball. Vigilant supervision is well-accepted common sense when it comes to little ones and pools. Whether they’re just getting a taste for the water or are starting to become confident little future Ian Thorpe’s, a responsible adult should always be inside the pool fencing and actively supervising, remaining within arms reach, at all times. But what about when our little ones grow up and their water confidence increases? What is the right amount of supervision? Well, the first thing is to remember confidence and competence are two very different things, and it is important you are basing supervision needs on the latter rather than former. Before even considering moving from that arms length distance, ensure your swimmers are able to swim on their own without an aid, tread water, can easily get themselves back to the pool edge if required, and know to keep fingers and toes out of pool drains and suction points.

Even when you’re feeling comfortable with their skill level, it’s still always recommended to stay in constant visual contact, and in a position when you can quickly and easily jump in if required, especially if the young swimmer is splashing solo. If your children are tall enough to open the pool gate themselves, it’s also important to set the ground rule that they’re not to do so without an adult watching them, and ensure they understand why, so they’re not tempted to rebel.

Finally, it’s important to consider how you’ll ensure pool safety for those summer poolside parties with guests. With more adults around, it can be all to easy to find yourselves in the “I thought you were watching” scenario; a dangerous and possibly disastrous place to be. A handy hack to avoid such a situation? Bring in the Captain Safe-Splash wrist band! Easily rotated around the available adults, whoever is donning the fashion statement assumes responsibility for those in the pool so there is at least one active, responsible pair of eyes on the water at all times.

boy and girl mid air, jumping into a pool

With a little extra prep work and some firm but fair splash-safe ground rules for all to follow, home swimming pools can become the centre of home entertainment over the warmer months and are a great way of bringing family and friends together in a fun and active way.

Wishing you a splash-safe swim season ahead!

Please note, these considerations are by no means exhaustive, and are information rather than advice, so be sure to familiarise yourself with the appropriate legislation in your state. You may like to run a safety checklist like that provided by Royal Lifesaving Australia, and consult a pool safety specialist if you have any questions or concerns about swimming pool safety in your home.

How to Get Your Pool Ready for Spring

Anyone kinda feel winter just didn’t really hit this year?

While we’ve had pretty stunning weather through the traditionally cold months, we know some of you may still have kept your pool in hibernation. With spring now upon us, it’s time to dust off the cover and get your pool ready for spring swimming!

Of course, if the budget allows it, the simplest thing to do is call in the professionals. They’ll test the water and adjust accordingly, refill if needed, give your pool a good scrub down, and get it looking crystal clear and ready for action. If that’s not an option, or you just prefer the DIY approach, here are a few steps to get your home swimming pool primed and prepped for sunny weather splashing.

Clean your pool cover

If you have a cover on your pool (which we highly recommend if you’re the winter pool hibernation type), it can be tempting to just peel it straight back and dive on in, come that first warm day, but doing so is only going to cause more clean-up chaos now and in the future. Firstly, you’re likely to find the dust and debris will happily re-home itself on the surface of your pool defeating much of the cover’s purpose in the first place. Secondly, a dirty cover rolled up and sitting in the sun is only inviting algae to grow. So, as annoying as it may be, it’s worth putting the time in to sparkle that cover up. You can use a cover pump up any debris and broom off the dust before rolling up the cover.

Check and reconnect your equipment

If it’s been a while since you’ve last used your pool, and especially if home organisation is one of your…let’s say… ‘growth’ goals, it’s time to do the house and shed hunt for all the important equipment. The list usually includes a pool testing kit, leaf scooper, pool brush, hose, and of course the all-important pool toys and fun gadgets. Check for any kinks or holes in hoses (and blow up flamingoes!), clean out the filter and make sure it is working, test the heater, and give the pump a kick over. Be sure to do a quick safety check, too, that all equipment is in proper working condition and there are no new electrical items or cables surrounding the pool that have made their way into the splash zone over the cooler months.

It’s time to get your hands dirty…or at least your tools

By now you’ll have already cleaned out your filter, but be sure to clean out the skimmer box, rake out the leaves, and scrub down the walls. If you’ve got a pool vacuum, get it fired up and in action. We also recommend cleaning down the pool surroundings because what’s on the outside will quickly make its way in once the pool’s back in action! Be sure to keep an eye out for backyard “friends” that may have taken up home in the area during the quieter months.

Check your H2O

It’s quite likely that your water levels will be down a little, given the many beautifully sunlit days we’ve had this winter, so check and fill appropriately. It’s a good idea, during this ‘ready for spring’ step, to check for any structural damage, possible cracks or leaks. If you notice anything even a little unusual, it’s always a good idea to get it checked out sooner rather than later, so be sure to call if you need any help. Once you’ve refilled your pool, you’ll need to let the pump run through for 24 hours before testing the water. While fibreglass pools have less chance of growing unwanted guests like algae because of their smooth surface, it’s still important to check your water chemistry, ensuring the right kit for your pool type and following the instructions of your pool testing kit.

Check and reconnect your equipment

The beauty of fibreglass pools is that they’re generally faster and easier to keep clean and well balanced, but a little regular maintenance still goes a long way to ensuring a great pool season! Keep a regular eye on your filter, ensure the water levels stay above the skimmer box opening, and scoop out any debris on a weekly basis.

With a little TLC done and dusted, your pool is ready for spring splashing and all that’s left to do is throw on the togs and dive right in. Happy spring swimming!

Why Owning a Pool is Good For Your Health

Want a swimming pool in your backyard but struggling to justify the luxury in your budget?

Woman lying in water with eyes closed, relaxing

Well, perhaps this read will help you reposition your dream pool from a luxury item to a must-have health benefit! Beyond just the obvious, swimming has so many health and wellbeing benefits. So, here are 5 good reasons to help justify your dream pool budget!

1. Swimming is one of the best low-impact cardio workouts

Ok, we’re starting with the obvious. We all know regular exercise is good for our health, and swimming is one of the best forms of exercise there is. Because water is denser than air, swimming requires far more physical effort across your limbs than walking or running does. Unlike the latter options, though, the pressure is evenly distributed across the body so you get the cardio hit you need without the negative impact on your knees, hips, and other joints. It also means that you’re using far more muscle groups at once than you would in other forms of cardio, so it’s the perfect full-body workout.

2. Swimming is good for your brain

Exercise, in general, is known to help memory and thinking skills. According to Harvard Medical School, this is due to its “ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors”. So why swimming over other forms of exercise? Well, it’s been shown to be better at increasing blood flow to the brain which can help repair damaged cells and improve brain function. Studies have also revealed that swimming promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus and corpus callosum. In non-techy-terms, that means it helps to strengthen the memory and cognition parts of our brain, building new neural pathways to think better and remember more. Swimming also does wonders for our mental health. With a combination of the endorphin hit (the main hormone responsible for reducing stress and pain) and the calming and meditative experience of moving through water, swimming has been shown to increase mental relaxation, and help reduce anxiety and depression.

3. Swimming is good for your heart

Not just a winner on the brain, research shows that swimming is also good for your heart. Again, due to its effectiveness in reducing inflammation, a few laps of the pool or some fun aqua aerobics each day can assist in reducing the likelihood of fatty build-ups in your arteries, otherwise known as atherosclerosis, which is a strong indicator for risk of heart disease. We’ll admit that this one applies to any form of aerobic exercise, but if you haven’t guessed it yet, we’re pretty big fans of the H2O type! Not keen on hitting the pool every day? Perhaps you could dust off the VCR and whack on one of those classic Jane Fonder VHS tapes for a drier aerobic workout in between swim sessions!

4. Swimming gives you a healthy dose of Vitamin D

Yes, there are some pretty whizz-bang gym workout machines these days that promise that perfect summer bod, but exercising in the confinement of four walls all the time means you’re missing out on the extra benefits of the great outdoors! Choosing the pool over the gym at least a few times a week gives you the chance for a healthy dose of Vitamin D, which helps you better absorb calcium and assists in immune system functioning, amongst other benefits. Throw in the added boost in serotonin (often referred to as the happy hormone) that the sun provides and you’re onto a great health hack. Of course, we encourage you to practise the all-important ‘slip-slap-slop’ regime and limit your exposure during times when UV light is at its strongest (lunch-time swims are best kept short or shaded), but some well-managed time in the sun is a wonderful mood booster and a great tablet-free, natural vitamin supplement.

5. Swimming is fun!

Ok, again, we get that we may as well have built the bandwagon for owning your own pool, but come on – who doesn’t love the feeling of cool water against the skin on a hot summer’s day, or the relaxing and therapeutic benefits of bathing in a heated pool?
